Students in Mrs. Settle's 3rd grade class have had a lot of fun reading about how historic places, symbols, and documents represent our nation. This week, students read about the Statue of Liberty in a fun narrative nonfiction story. They showed their understanding of the story by representing the main idea and supporting details on their own Statue of Liberty crown. Afterwards, they coded on Scratch Jr. to show what it would be like to visit the Statue of Liberty on a field trip, just like the class did in this week's story!

YES celebrates Unity Day! Unity Day is a chance for families, schools, and communities to come together and send a visible message of kindness, acceptance, and inclusion to prevent bullying. A big thank you to all who wore orange today! 🧡

Next week we will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week at school and highlighting how our stallions make Really Excellent Decisions. Join in on the fun by participating in our spirit days! See the attached flyer for details.

On Wednesday, October 22, we’re proud to stand together for Unity Day! 🧡 We’re wearing orange to promote kindness, acceptance, and inclusion—and to take a stand against bullying. Let’s make every student feel safe, seen, and supported.

Building Confidence, One Story at a Time 📚✨
Mrs. Rozwadowski and Mrs. Malone have started a new Friday tradition—inviting 5th grade ELL students to read stories to kindergartners! This special opportunity helps our older ELL students build confidence and feel proud of their accomplishments while inspiring our younger learners.
The first guest reader did an amazing job sharing her story! We can’t wait to welcome more ELL friends to read with our kinder-kiddos in the weeks ahead. 💛

Meet Dr. Capellini and her speech intern, Hurieh Abed. Miss Abed graduated from Eastern View High School and is currently completing her Master’s degree in Speech Pathology from Emerson College. Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) work with a variety of student needs to include articulation, language delays, and stuttering. Please reach out to Dr. Capellini if you have a concern about your school aged child. Also reach out if you have a high school or college age student who would like to shadow her to see if this is an area that they would be interested in majoring in college. The Virginia Teaching Scholarship Loan Program (VTSLP) is one funding source available to college students who agree to work in a Virginia public school after graduation in the area of speech pathology. Yowell Elementary is so happy to have Miss Abed with us and we love our homegrown SLPs.❤️

Mrs. Button’s kindergarteners had fun playing Monster Math - counting with one to one correspondence, and finding the matching numeral. First graders have been busy building and comparing numbers to 100. Lunch bunch has been a fun time for them as well!

🎉 Attendance Matters at Yowell! 🎉
Students with outstanding attendance during the first part of the school year were entered into a special drawing — and one lucky student from each homeroom was selected to “Chalk the Walk!” 🖍️✨ These winners helped spread positivity by decorating our sidewalks with colorful messages and designs celebrating learning, friendship, and school spirit.
👏 Great job to all of our students for showing up and shining bright each day!
🌟 October Attendance Challenge: The homeroom with the best overall attendance this month will earn a special class reward! Let’s keep the momentum going, Stallions — every day counts! 💪🐴

Ms. Sanborn’s class completed a STEM lab with Mrs. Dugger testing different items to see whether they were magnetic or not. Afterwards, the class “went fishing” and caught some addition math facts to solve!
Ms. Rozwadowski's first graders have been busy bees learning about animals and their homes. They learned about how bees work together to build their hives. Then they drew bees of their own and made honeycomb pieces which looked even better hanging up together. Lastly, they celebrated their success with honey candies!

After reading the story Dear Dragon, about a dragon and a human unknowingly being pen pals, Mrs. Settle’s third graders teamed up with students in Mrs. Wheeler’s class for a pen pal project. Each student chose a code name and exchanged three letters. At the reveal, students wore dragon masks or necklaces and finally got to meet their pen pals.

Mrs. Clark’s First Grade is starting October off thinking like scientists! Our young scientists explored dissolving pumpkins to make observations and ask questions about what happens. We also got hands-on in our “kitchen lab,” making Pumpkin Fluff by practicing sequencing skills using a recipe.
It’s been a fantastic start to October—full of curiosity, discovery, and a little pumpkin fun!
