Students in Mrs. Settle's 3rd grade class have had a lot of fun reading about how historic places, symbols, and documents represent our nation. This week, students read about the Statue of Liberty in a fun narrative nonfiction story. They showed their understanding of the story by representing the main idea and supporting details on their own Statue of Liberty crown. Afterwards, they coded on Scratch Jr. to show what it would be like to visit the Statue of Liberty on a field trip, just like the class did in this week's story!

Meet Dr. Capellini and her speech intern, Hurieh Abed. Miss Abed graduated from Eastern View High School and is currently completing her Master’s degree in Speech Pathology from Emerson College. Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) work with a variety of student needs to include articulation, language delays, and stuttering. Please reach out to Dr. Capellini if you have a concern about your school aged child. Also reach out if you have a high school or college age student who would like to shadow her to see if this is an area that they would be interested in majoring in college. The Virginia Teaching Scholarship Loan Program (VTSLP) is one funding source available to college students who agree to work in a Virginia public school after graduation in the area of speech pathology. Yowell Elementary is so happy to have Miss Abed with us and we love our homegrown SLPs.❤️
